Dear MA Families and Stakeholders,
Over the past several months, you may have been aware of the discussions by the Lewis-Palmer Scholl District Board of Education. For nearly a year, they have been evaluating the safety and security needs as well as the capacity needs of the District. In all of those evaluations, the future plans of Monument Academy (MA) have always been included.
The District has grown by nearly 891 students (14.9%) since 2006 and is conservatively projected to grow by another 945 students (14%) in the next 5 years and 1789 students (26.7%) in the next 10 years. Even taking into account that MA will add more than 500 seats in our new high school, the District has determined it needs to construct and equip a new elementary school located on the Bear Creek campus and repurpose the current Bear Creek Elementary to a middle school. It was also determined that safety and security enhancements were needed at all District schools including Monument Academy.
In order to finance these capital projects, the Lewis-Palmer School District Board of Education will place a $36.5 million bond question before the voters this November. If approved by voters, Monument Academy will receive significant dollars:
$3.5 million to construct an 8,000 square foot competition gymnasium and a 4,000 square foot men’s and women’s locker rooms at the site of the new high school.
$125,000 for security enhancements at the K-5 facility. These enhancements include, but are not limited to, security vestibules, upgrades to door locks, lighting, cameras, radios, security bollards and mirrors.
At the MA Board of Directors meeting on September 13th, the Board unanimously passed a resolution in support of this bond by the District. A copy of that resolution can be found by clicking: MA Supports Bond
Also on the November ballot, the Lewis-Palmer School District Board of Education has placed a Mill Levy Override, if approved by the voters, the District would be authorized to levy one million dollars in additional operating revenue for a maximum of seven years. The additional operating funds will be used for safety and security enhancement at all Lewis-Palmer School District 38 schools including Monument Academy Charter School.
If approved, an approximate annual amount of $170,000 will be provided to Monument Academy Charter School.
At the MA Board of Directors meeting on September 13th, the Board unanimously passed a resolution in support of this Mill Levy Override by the District. A copy of that resolution can be found by clicking: MA Supports MLO
The Monument Academy Board of Directors encourages every stakeholder to examine the merits of both the bond question as well as the Mill Levy Override proposal and come to your own decision to support or vote against. However, the Board wanted you to know the disbursements (approximately $4.8 million) that will be given to MA.
