Mrs. Seymour has been a teacher and administrator at Monument Academy since 2008. She began her teaching career in 1992 in Aurora Public School and Douglas County Schools as an Eighth grade Science, English, and History teacher. Prior to accepting an administrative role at Monument Academy, Mrs. Seymour taught preschool for three years and sixth-grade science for five years at Monument Academy. She served as team lead and science department lead during her MA middle school teaching tenure. Mrs. Seymour graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Kansas. Rock Chalk!
Julie is passionate about all things science-related and curriculum-related and she has a special place in her heart for the middle-school learner. She has mentored students to compete in the Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair and Colorado State Science Fair and has sponsored various science-related clubs, including Girl’s STEM and Aerospace Club. Julie has led curriculum development at Monument Academy since 2015.

Carol Skinner is beginning her 14th year at Monument Academy where she will be serving as the Director of Instruction and Evaluation. Carol received her undergraduate degree from The University of Alabama and earned her teaching certificate and Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction from UCCS. Carol’s passion is for helping teachers reach their full potential and she enjoys helping first year teachers adjust to Monument Academy. Carol is the mom of Cleone and Cydney and enjoys running, hiking, reading, and watching British T.V. shows.

Ms. Barrette has been at Monument Academy since 2015. She began her career at Monument Academy as a 4th grade teacher and then taught 1st grade. In 2020, Laura became the Assistant Principal for the Elementary School. Laura received her undergraduate degree from The University of Northern Colorado, and her Master’s degree in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University. Laura grew up in Monument and has formed strong connections with the families and staff at Monument Academy. Laura loves to spend time with her family and is never too busy to say hi to current and past MA students when she’s out and about. You’ll find her hiking (or shopping) in her spare time.

Sherry Buzzell has been employed at Monument Academy since 2005 and is currently the Director of Human Resources. Sherry has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organization Management and Human Resources from Colorado Christian University. Prior to coming to Monument Academy , Sherry worked for the Colorado Springs Police Department as a police officer for 12 years before staying home for four years with her three daughters, all of whom attended Monument Academy from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Sherry is a native of Colorado and married to her wonderful husband, Steve, also a Colorado native. In her spare time she enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with her family.

Karen McKeown has worked for over a decade in education – both as a para and a teacher in various grade levels. She received a B.A. from U.C. Davis in Economics with a minor in Organizational Studies and earned her teaching credential from Cal State Hayward. Karen and her family have been a part of the MA family since 2006. She and her husband, Jay, have 2 teenage boys. She loves to read, enjoy coffee with friends, camp, hike and spend time with her family. Amy Zarkovacki has been a part of the MA family since its inception in 1996. Her involvement began as an MA parent and volunteer. In 2003 she began her work at the Monument Academy front office, followed by Registrar in 2006 and finally Director of Admissions in 2017. Amy and her husband have 2 adult children who are Alumni of Monument Academy. She enjoys spending time with her family, boating, and crocheting.

Chandy Buckingham has been Monument Academy’s Admissions Assistant since 2016. She has been an active part of MA since moving to Monument in 2013, volunteering in the classrooms, serving as PTO Vice President and Spirit Wear Coordinator and substitute teaching. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts with a minor in Political Science from Colorado State University.
Chandy and her husband have been married since 2003 and they have three children, all Monument Academy alumni. Chandy enjoys spending time with her family and menagerie of animals, cooking, gardening and horseback riding.

Sharla is entering her 11th year in a school admin-office role and is honored to be part of the MA team. Prior to coming to the West Campus, she worked in ASD20; before that, she was a homeschool mom, and before that, an Air Force Officer. She earned her Master of Science in Management from Troy State University and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Florida. She is married to Mark, a CO native and retired Air Force Officer; they have two boys: Stephen is in the US Coast Guard stationed in San Francisco and Brian is attending CO School of Mines. Julie Ritschard has been living in Colorado since 2002. She manned the front desk of Monument Academy for over 10 years and is now the Admin Assistant. She attended Northern Arizona University working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering.
Julie grew up in Southern California and worked at Disneyland. She is married with grown children. She has a second business of raising Suri alpacas. She enjoys ranching, giving alpaca tours, working with alpaca yarn and quilting.

Beth was born at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Her father was a career U.S. Army Officer. She attended schools in the U.S., England, and Germany as a young student. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Beth met her husband Steve in Greeley while attending UNC. Steve spent twenty-one years in the U.S. Army, most of his career was spent at SHAPE/NATO in Belgium, sixteen years in fact! While there, Beth earned her certificate in English as a Second Language and worked as an English Instructor and the English Language Assessment Coordinator at the SHAPE/NATO Language School. This assignment afforded Beth the opportunity to become quite proficient in conversational French and German. After retiring from the military, Beth and Steve returned home to Colorado Springs and Beth began working for the UNHCR CRESL program, where she coordinated and taught English, Job Skills, American Culture, and GED classes. While working for the Colorado Refugee ESL program, Beth received her teaching authorization from the Colorado Department of Education in Literacy Instruction. Beth went on to accept a position with Colorado Calvert Academy Online as the Blended Learning Teacher. It was here that Beth discovered a love for technology, digital art and photography, and online education. While working for CCA, Beth completed coursework, earning certificates in Blended and Online Learning. Beth is passionate about learning and considers herself a lifelong student as well as a career educator. She is honored to be a part of Monument Academy as the Tech Integration and Resources Teacher in Elementary and Middle School.

Erin Hastedt joined MA as the Gifted and Talented Coordinator in the 2019-2020 school year. She brings over 20 years of experience in the field of gifted education, an endorsement in GT and is SENG trained. Her approach to gifted education is personal, individualized and need-based.
Mrs. Hastedt grew up and went to college in Boston, Massachusetts before moving to Denver in 1994 to pursue a post-graduate degree in education at the University of Denver. In 2016 she got her K-12 endorsement in gifted education. While in high school and college, she was a dedicated and successful student-athlete with a decorated career in both soccer and track.
In her free time she loves to read, workout, listen to music and watch sports of all kinds, especially soccer!
Mrs. Hastedt is married, with two gifted teenagers attending Palmer Ridge, three dogs and lives in beautiful Woodmoor, Colorado!

Karen Michael is excited to be part of the Monument Academy learning community as the Director of Literacy and Intervention. She earned her B.A. in Social Science/Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado and her M.A. in Educational Technology from Lesley University. Additionally, Mrs. Michael completed her Principal Licensure through Adams State University.
Prior to accepting the position at MA, Mrs. Michael has been an Assistant Principal, Administrative Teacher on Special Assignment, School Assessment Coordinator, Technology Director, MTSS Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Data Analysis Leader as well as taught the various grades first through fourth all within the beautiful state of Colorado.
Outside of teaching she enjoys hiking, exploring the Colorado mountains, traveling, and watching the various professional sports that Denver offers with her family.

Born in New Zealand, Jessica Coote has been given the opportunity to teach both in America and abroad after studying education and earning her teaching degree and licensure at the University of Northern Colorado. Over recent years traveling between the two countries, Ms. Coote has expanded her toolbox of approaches and practices to better educate all children. She has worked with students of all ages and abilities in a variety of schools. Ms. Coote has been teaching at Monument Academy since 2014 and has been a part of the school since its opening in 1996. On her off time, Ms. Coote loves to read, hike, and adventure!

Coach Stevenson has 20 years of head lacrosse coaching and program administration experience. Most recently, a Division III Head Coach, he has lead the start of two collegiate programs, founded his own youth program in Chicago and has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2006.
Stevenson has coached more than 50 collegiate and high school all conference players, lead Saint Ignatius College Prep (IL) to the 2009 Class B State Title, and regularly works with all ages and skill levels of lacrosse players.
As a long time lacrosse and strength coach, some of the best players he has seen play the game have been multi-sport athletes. With lacrosse encompassing so many tactical and technical skills included in other sports, he believes that youth through high school players are best served experiencing multiple sports and activities. Equally important as playing multiple sports/activities he stresses physical literacy through strength and conditioning allowing athletes to better understand what they can do to help themselves be and feel their best.

Carrie started volunteering in the counseling department at Monument Academy in 2015 and presently is the school’s Social Worker. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida in Psychology, Master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas San Antonio, and is a licensed Social Worker with the state of Colorado. Carrie brings many years of experience and enthusiasm to the students and staff at Monument Academy. She has a long history working with children and adolescents in the areas of crisis intervention, running elementary and middle school groups, developing, and maintaining mental health programs. Her focus has been on anger management and suicide awareness as well as working with high-risk adolescents and teaching them social and life skills.
Carrie has been married since 1999, she and her husband have 5 daughters with 4 of them attending Monument Academy and the other previously acting in a teaching capacity. They have been a part of the military community for the last 19 years, have lived in many places and are happy to call Monument home! Carrie enjoys hiking, skiing, traveling, watching her girls play soccer, basketball, gymnastics, cheer, and track while creating lasting memories with family and friends.

This is Emily Davis’ first year at Monument Academy as the High School Counselor serving the 9th and 10th grades. Emily’s favorite part about being a School Counselor is helping students realize their potential as they prepare for life after high school. School Counselors support students in three domains including Academics (Credit Tracking, Transcript Audits, Scheduling), College/Career (Concurrent Enrollment, Naviance: ICAPs, Scholarships, College/Job Applications & Resumes, etc.), and Social Emotional Development (Crisis, Grief, Character, Friendships, Mental Health Support & Resources).
Emily is in her 6th year as a School Counselor and comes to MA with counseling experience at all grade levels in varying school sizes and community types. She earned her Master of Science in Professional School Counseling at Minnesota State University – Mankato. Prior to earning her master’s degree, she worked as a Civil Engineer earning her Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota State University, Go Bison! Since moving to Colorado over 4 years ago, Emily, her husband, Trent, sons, Braden & Jaxon, and pup, Beau, together enjoy backpacking, hiking, camping, and paddleboarding.

Phyllis and her husband Sean moved to Colorado Springs in 2012 with their three children and rescue dog. When she is not working, you will find her making memories with family, vacationing in the mountains, binge watching Netflix shows, reading and playing games. After having spent many years in the public school system, Phyllis is thrilled to call Monument Academy home and appreciates the enthusiasm and dedication of her colleagues.
Phyllis is a licensed school counselor with the state of Colorado and joined the MA counseling department in 2018. She graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies and received her M.A. in Counseling and Human Services from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from California Southern University.
