        Marc Brocklehurst has been with Monument Academy since 2019. He has served in roles focused on public accounting, tax preparation, financial analysis, and operations and quality management. Mr. Brocklehurst’s educational background includes a B.S. in Finance (Colorado Technical University), B.S. in Biochemistry (Calvin University) and a M.S. in Accounting (Regis University). He has an active Colorado CPA license and is member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

        Mr. Brocklehurst and his wife Pamela have four children, 2 attending MA and 2 attending Calvin University. Mr. Brocklehurst and his family love to take road trips, hike, and play games. He enjoys reading science fiction novels, investing, and cooking (apparently, he makes a pretty tasty roast goose at Christmas).

        Interesting Fact: Mr. Brocklehurst has not always been an accountant. His career started as a Research & Development Polymer Chemist.

          David Kennington

          David Kennington grew up in Parker, Colorado, attending Ponderosa High School, and began his education career in 2002 as a middle school math teacher in Colorado Springs.

          Subsequently, he taught for over a decade in Palmer High School’s International Baccalaureate program, instructing courses in World History, United States History, and World Religions, as well as serving as Chair of the History department.

          Mr. Kennington received his principal license through School Leaders of America and their Troops to Principal’s program, and served as an administrator at Doherty High School, Horizon Middle School, and The Vanguard School, before being hired as principal at Monument Academy in 2022.

          Mr. Kennington has a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Colorado and Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University. In 1992, he was commissioned in the United States Navy and served as a pilot in Operations Southern Watch, Noble Eagle, and Enduring Freedom, retiring from the Navy Reserves in 2020.

          Married with four wonderful children, Mr. Kennington is thrilled to live along the magnificent front range of the Rockies in close proximity to the 14ers he loves to climb.

                  Mrs. Duca was born and raised in Colorado. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and earned a Secondary Teaching Certificate from Colorado State University-Pueblo. Mrs. Duca earned a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Additionally, she earned her Principal License from Adams State University. Mrs. Duca began her teaching career in 2005 and has experience as a classroom teacher, dean of students, and assistant principal. Mrs. Duca started at MA in December 2021, and she is very excited to be a part of the MA team!  She is delighted to work with such a caring staff and amazing students! She and her husband have two children who are both graduates of Colorado State University. During her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors and hiking with family and friends.

                      Kurt Walker

                      Mr. Walker has been working in education since 1984. He began as a paraprofessional in Florida as he worked his way through college. In 1989 he became a certified educational interpreter for the hearing impaired. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Nova Southeastern University in 1992 and began his teaching career in January of 1993. He taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade in Florida as well as being a Title One Resource teacher. In 2000, Mr. Walker moved to Monument, Colorado and was hired here at Monument Academy to teach 6th grade. In 2006, Mr. Walker became a principal in Elizabeth, Colorado. He continued working in Colorado charter schools as an administrator until 2013. He and his wife moved to Phoenix, Arizona to be closer to his in-laws where he was the principal for a charter school for eight years. In October 2021, he joined the Monument Academy staff again as our interim assistant principal. Mr. Walker is happy to be a part of the MA team and looks forward to many more years here. He and his wife are residents in Monument and enjoy game nights, hiking, and quality time with his siblings, who all reside in Colorado.

                          Ms. Barrette has been at Monument Academy since 2015. She began her career at Monument Academy as a 4th grade teacher and then taught 1st grade. In 2020, Laura became the Assistant Principal for the Elementary School. Laura received her undergraduate degree from The University of Northern Colorado, and her Master’s degree in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University. Laura grew up in Monument and has formed strong connections with the families and staff at Monument Academy. Laura loves to spend time with her family and is never too busy to say hi to current and past MA students when she’s out and about. You’ll find her hiking (or shopping) in her spare time.

                                  Sherry Buzzell has been employed at Monument Academy since 2005 and is currently the Director of Human Resources.  Sherry has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organization Management and Human Resources from Colorado Christian University. Prior to coming to Monument Academy , Sherry worked for the Colorado Springs Police Department as a police officer for 12 years before staying home for four years with her three daughters, all of whom attended Monument Academy from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Sherry is a native of Colorado and married to her wonderful husband, Steve, also a Colorado native.  In her spare time she enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with her family.

                                      Mrs. Caplinger was born and raised in Colorado Springs. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in Elementary Education from UCCS in 2008 and has been teaching ever since. Mrs. Caplinger has taught 5th grade at Monument Academy since 2015, and after some time off to be with her new son, she is excited to be back at MA in her new role as Elementary Educational Technology Coordinator/Teacher. In her spare time, Mrs. Caplinger loves to hike, read, shop, and spend time with her husband and son.

                                          Born in New Zealand, Jessica Coote has been given the opportunity to teach both in America and abroad after studying education and earning her teaching degree and licensure at the University of Northern Colorado.  Over recent years traveling between the two countries, Ms. Coote has expanded her toolbox of approaches and practices to better educate all children.  She has worked with students of all ages and abilities in a variety of schools.  Ms. Coote has been teaching at Monument Academy since 2014 and has been a part of the school since its opening in 1996.  On her off time, Ms. Coote loves to read, hike, and adventure!

                                              This is Emily Davis’ first year at Monument Academy as the High School Counselor serving the 9th and 10th grades. Emily’s favorite part about being a School Counselor is helping students realize their potential as they prepare for life after high school. School Counselors support students in three domains including Academics (Credit Tracking, Transcript Audits, Scheduling), College/Career (Concurrent Enrollment, Naviance: ICAPs, Scholarships, College/Job Applications & Resumes, etc.), and Social Emotional Development (Crisis, Grief, Character, Friendships, Mental Health Support & Resources).

                                              Emily is in her 6th year as a School Counselor and comes to MA with counseling experience at all grade levels in varying school sizes and community types. She earned her Master of Science in Professional School Counseling at Minnesota State University – Mankato. Prior to earning her master’s degree, she worked as a Civil Engineer earning her Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota State University, Go Bison! Since moving to Colorado over 4 years ago, Emily, her husband, Trent, sons, Braden & Jaxon, and pup, Beau, together enjoy backpacking, hiking, camping, and paddleboarding.

                                                          Jo-Anna Halvorson was born in Philadelphia. She graduated with a BA at Millersville University in Pennsylvania in 2001 with a major in English and a minor in philosophy. After college, she moved to CA and started her teaching career as a 6-12 English teacher. She joined the US Air Force in 2005, and has lived in Turkey, England, and South Korea. In 2011, she completed her Master’s in Education and a certification in special education at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She is currently in her second master’s program for school and mental health counseling at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She will graduate this May 2022. She plans on completing her LPC licensure and becoming a registered play therapist. She is excited to be at Monument Academy and loves working with the elementary kids.

                                                              Erin Hastedt joined MA as the Gifted and Talented Coordinator in the 2019-2020 school year.  She brings over 20 years of experience in the field of gifted education, an endorsement in GT and is SENG trained.  Her approach to gifted education is personal, individualized and need-based.

                                                              Mrs. Hastedt grew up and went to college in Boston, Massachusetts before moving to Denver in 1994 to pursue a post-graduate degree in education at the University of Denver. In 2016 she got her K-12 endorsement in gifted education. While in high school and college, she was a dedicated and successful student-athlete with a decorated career in both soccer and track.

                                                              In her free time she loves to read, workout, listen to music and watch sports of all kinds, especially soccer!

                                                              Mrs. Hastedt is married, with two gifted teenagers attending Palmer Ridge, three dogs and lives in beautiful Woodmoor, Colorado!

                                                                  Carrie started volunteering in the counseling department at Monument Academy in 2015 and presently is the school’s Social Worker. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida in Psychology, Master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas San Antonio, and is a licensed Social Worker with the state of Colorado. Carrie brings many years of experience and enthusiasm to the students and staff at Monument Academy. She has a long history working with children and adolescents in the areas of crisis intervention, running elementary and middle school groups, developing, and maintaining mental health programs. Her focus has been on anger management and suicide awareness as well as working with high-risk adolescents and teaching them social and life skills.

                                                                  Carrie has been married since 1999, she and her husband have 5 daughters with 4 of them attending Monument Academy and the other previously acting in a teaching capacity. They have been a part of the military community for the last 19 years, have lived in many places and are happy to call Monument home! Carrie enjoys hiking, skiing, traveling, watching her girls play soccer, basketball, gymnastics, cheer, and track while creating lasting memories with family and friends.

                                                                          Tina Leone has been an educator for over thirty years and during that time has served in a variety of education organizations in multiple capacities. She has been a parent, grandparent, teacher, and school leader in private and charter schools as well as traditional public schools. As a teacher and school leader, she has helped either open or develop several charter schools in the Pikes Peak region, one of which was Monument Academy. Tina was also a founding board member for the Colorado Charter School Institute, a state charter school authorizing agency and served a three-year term with that organization. She has also served as Board President of the Professional Association of Colorado Educators (PACE). Tina started her current position as Director of Academics with Monument Academy in 2022.

                                                                              Phyllis is a licensed school counselor with the state of Colorado and joined the MA counseling department in 2017. She graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies and received her M.A. in Counseling and Human Services from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from California Southern University. After having spent many years in the public school system, Phyllis is thrilled to call Monument Academy home and appreciates the enthusiasm and dedication of her colleagues.

                                                                                  Karen McKeown has worked for over a decade in education – both as a para and a teacher in various grade levels. She received a B.A. from U.C. Davis in Economics with a minor in Organizational Studies and earned her teaching credential from Cal State Hayward. Karen and her family have been a part of the MA family since 2006. She and her husband, Jay, have 2 teenage boys. She loves to read, enjoy coffee with friends, camp, hike and spend time with her family. Her new position of Business Office Administrative Assistant allows her to combine her love for education with her enjoyment of administrative work and helping others.

                                                                                          Karen Michael is excited to be part of the Monument Academy learning community as the Director of Literacy and Intervention. She earned her B.A. in Social Science/Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado and her M.A. in Educational Technology from Lesley University.  Additionally, Mrs. Michael completed her Principal Licensure through Adams State University.

                                                                                          Prior to accepting the position at MA, Mrs. Michael has been an Assistant Principal, Administrative Teacher on Special Assignment, School Assessment Coordinator, Technology Director, MTSS Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Data Analysis Leader as well as taught the various grades first through fourth all within the beautiful state of Colorado.

                                                                                          Outside of teaching she enjoys hiking, exploring the Colorado mountains, traveling, and watching the various professional sports that Denver offers with her family.

                                                                                              Sara has been a part of Monument Academy as a parent since 2010 years and as a front desk lady since 2016. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership and brings many years of office experience to the Front Desk position. She is a happy wife and mother of 5 boys; 2 are current MA students. Sara and her family have lived in Colorado since 2006. When she’s not smiling at the guests at Monument Academy, she enjoy’s hiking, many cups of coffee and family game night.

                                                                                                  Dr./Mrs. Phillips has been at Monument Academy since 2017 when her family moved here from California. She is married to Mark Phillips, and they have 3 children. Mia has been in education since 1996, and has served as a teacher, principal, dean of students, preschool director, volunteer, educational consultant, and cheer coach. Dr. Phillips also home schooled her children for 3 years before taking the position at Monument Academy.

                                                                                                  Dr. Phillips enjoys reading, going to the movies, attending church with her family, and she especially enjoys talking to others about Star Wars and anything Disney related.

                                                                                                  Dr. Phillips has her bachelor’s degree in Child Development/Early Childhood with an emphasis in Child Psychology. Her Master’s Degree is in Education, and her doctorate is in Education Administration and Leadership. Her career in education can be highlighted by receiving the Director of the Year by Knowledge Learning, and an award for Beyond the Excellence in Education by the Obama Administration where she attended a dinner in Washington DC and met the First Lady. She has had the privilege of working with programs in the Mulholland Education Corridor, Johnson and Johnson, Samuel Goldwyn Children’s Center, MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Los Angeles), and Fox Children’s Center, among others.

                                                                                                      Julie Ritschard has been living in Colorado since 2002. She manned the front desk of Monument Academy for over 10 years and is now the Admin Assistant. She attended Northern Arizona University working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

                                                                                                      Julie grew up in Southern California and worked at Disneyland. She is married with grown children. She has a second business of raising Suri alpacas. She enjoys ranching, giving alpaca tours, working with alpaca yarn and quilting.

                                                                                                                          Coach Stevenson has 20 years of head lacrosse coaching and program administration experience. Most recently, a Division III Head Coach, he has lead the start of two collegiate programs, founded his own youth program in Chicago and has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association since 2006.

                                                                                                                          Stevenson has coached more than 50 collegiate and high school all conference players, lead Saint Ignatius College Prep (IL) to the 2009 Class B State Title, and regularly works with all ages and skill levels of lacrosse players.

                                                                                                                          As a long time lacrosse and strength coach, some of the best players he has seen play the game have been multi-sport athletes. With lacrosse encompassing so many tactical and technical skills included in other sports, he believes that youth through high school players are best served experiencing multiple sports and activities. Equally important as playing multiple sports/activities he stresses physical literacy through strength and conditioning allowing athletes to better understand what they can do to help themselves be and feel their best.

                                                                                                                                      Amy Zarkovacki has been a part of the MA family since its inception in 1996. Her involvement began as an MA parent and volunteer. In 2003 she began her work at the Monument Academy front office, followed by Registrar in 2006 and finally Director of Admissions in 2017. Amy and her husband have 2 adult children who are Alumni of Monument Academy.  She enjoys spending time with her family, boating, and crocheting.
